Why Finding A Full-Time Job Can Be So Difficult?

Photo by Alejandro Escamilla on Unsplash

The times are changing. It’s now becoming much more difficult to find a job, especially a full-time one. In fact, a study conducted last year showed that 50% of Australians aged between 15 and 25 years were not working full-time, and it’s taking around five years for students to find work following the completion of their studies. What’s strange about these statistics is that this generation is often considered the most educated, with more than 60% holding post-school qualifications. So why is it so difficult?

Promotion from within

For many businesses, promoting from within is often much more attractive than hiring external candidates. The biggest reason for this is that the business knows more about the employee as a worker, and the employee already has an understanding of the business culture and processes. This means they can spend less time on training if they hire from within. However, often this means there are only junior-level jobs available, some of which many job seekers will be overqualified for.

Issues with resumes

Companies and job websites generally use tracking systems that only forward on resumes that include certain keywords. 75% of resumes are actually rejected purely on this basis, meaning they’re never even seen by the hiring company. This means that following this process, only a handful will be brought in for an interview.

On top of this, many job seekers are relying on outdated resumes. Employers want something that stands out from the crowd and showcases the potential value of the employee to the company, regardless if he or she bought a professional resume.

Tight selection criteria

Many companies are also becoming overly selective. Just a few decades ago, companies would hire candidates with the assumption that they would stay with the business for life and therefore would be happy to invest, both financially and educationally, in a junior candidate. However, now employees often flit from job to job throughout their career. Consequently, companies are less willing to invest the time or money into training or upskilling and are instead looking for immediate value for their business from highly skilled and qualified individuals.

Lack of vocational and practical experience

In a recent survey of 14,000 people aged between 15 and 25 years old, about three quarters of respondents said they didn’t believe they had the relevant practical work experience required for certain advertised job. The problem here though is that practical experience is often prioritized over educational qualifications; it becomes a chicken and egg scenario. An applicant’s educational requirements are meeting the job description but their practical experience is not. However, how are they actually going to get the practical experience if no one will hire them?

Are there even enough jobs?

Another reason why people are questioning their ability to get hired full-time is simply a supply and demand issue. Are there enough jobs for the number of applicants? This is greatly affecting new graduates especially, perhaps because it has been shown that there has been a decline in the level of employment of new graduates. On top of this, more and more people are completing tertiary studies, meaning it’s possible that the market is flooded with junior-level job seekers.

Alongside this comes competition. While previously graduates and junior-level job seekers were competing against only one or two years of tertiary leavers, now they’re competing against several years’ worth.

On top of this, many employers are actually looking to fill part-time, contract, or even freelance positions, rather than offer full-time employment. “Full-time work is often difficult to find in certain industries where it is more attractive to employ part-timers. Employers are looking for innovative ways to reduce costs and make it easier to dismiss employees,” says David Alexander, Director of Student Services at The International Career Institute

Recent years have seen a substantial rise in the numbers of older workers in Australia and globally. For example, the number of over 65s in employment in Australia has more than tripled. There has been a similar increase in over 65s in employment in the UK. Since employers must abide by age discrimination laws, it means increased competition for roles.

Tips and tricks

Of course, there are several things you can do to land that dream full-time job you’re seeking.

  1. First develop a solid job search plan including target industry, timelines, and expectations.
  2. Second, look at your resume and skillset from a manager or HR perspective. This doesn’t mean you should put skills on your resume you think they’re looking for or answering questions in the way you believe they want. It means looking at your strengths and weaknesses against the job description. What can you bring to the job that no one else can? Remember, you’re more likely to be hired if you can add value to the organization.
  3. Be persistent. Just because you don’t get the first job or even the sixth job doesn’t mean you won’t find anything. Job searches take time and some employers take weeks to fill a position. This is frustrating, but patience pays off.
  4. Revisit your resume and cover letter. Don’t send the same cover letter to each job application, and adjust your resume when necessary. Different employers from some of the best rental businesses for example will be looking for different things, so tailor your cover letter and resume to the unique opportunity.
  5. Check your digital footprint. In this day and age, our social media profiles, even if set on private, can be accessed to some degree. Make sure your digital footprint is clean and accurate. Do a search online for your full name to see whether you have been tagged by another company or friends in images. If they’re inappropriate, you can request to take them down.
  6. Get your foot in the door. Even a small job can make a world of difference. It may take time to build up to your dream job, so don’t expect it right out of the university gates. Remember, the first-ever female commander and pilot of a Space Shuttle, Eileen Collins, began her career as a part-time math teacher.
  7. Seek remote employment. If you live in an affordable city like Minneapolis, don’t be afraid to cross state lines when looking for jobs; remote work is out there if you search hard enough for it!

Finding any kind of employment can be tough, and finding a full-time job can be even tougher. The freelance economy is upon us and for the first time, less than 50% of employed Australians are in permanent full-time jobs. However, if you do want to secure full-time employment, there are still ways to get there. It’s just about being patient, creative and persistent.

How to Nail Your Small Business Branding

Do you believe that branding is only meant for large corporations and companies in the world? If your answer is yes, then you will be surprised to know that small businesses need branding just as much as the market leaders. However, you should also know how to get it right.

Remember- starting a small business is only the first step but you can take these additional steps to take your enterprise to the next level with branding:

1. Start with a Logo

One of the most important aspects of a brand is the logo- there is no question about it. You can study various examples like Coca-Cola, Nike, Apple, etc. All of them are considered top brands and they all have iconic logos. What this goes to show is that even if yours is a small and generic business, you can project it as a big and trustworthy brand by creating a unique logo. Then, once you are happy with your logo you can work on improving your brand awareness. This can be done in several ways. For instance, you may wish to Create Stickers with Cricut as this can be a great marketing tool, especially for small businesses.

2. Work on Your Relationship with Customers

You can’t build a brand without bolstering your bond with your customers. So, learn how to build strong customer relationships online and apply methods that can help them trust you more easily. These include improving your public messaging, becoming more accessible to the customers, and providing better customer service.

3. Use Social Media to Your Advantage

Social media provides you one of the most inexpensive ways to market your business. You can use it to connect to your target demographic and also open a channel for them to communicate with you i.e. share feedback and complaints. This can go a long way in establishing a brand.

4. Find Your Voice

Let’s say that you sell handcrafted wood furniture in a particular city. If you have competition, then how will you stand out? If all the businesses sell handcrafted furniture, then what makes you special? Well, branding is the answer.

By finding your unique voice, you can attract new customers easily no matter how crowded the marketplace is. There are various ways you can go about it too. For instance, you can create a brand that’s all about providing employment to the veterans, or you could be a brand that appeals to the college students who need affordable and long-lasting chairs, tables, etc.

5. Don’t Let Your Customers Down

Small businesses often take unethical measures to fight competition which is the opposite of what you want to do if you want to create a brand. For instance, some businesses start offering subpar products or ignore the complaints of their customers which only hurts their reputation.

Strong brands have strong customer bases because the customers take pride in being their patrons. That’s something which can only happen if you offer exceptional customer service and treat them with the best products that you can provide.

6. Never Take Your Eyes off the Target Demographic

As a business owner, you want as many customers as possible. However, you simply can’t sell to everyone. There is only a small portion of the market that you can target for your products/services. So, it’s important that your messaging, logo, slogan, etc. are appealing to the kind of individuals you want to focus on.

Brands are important to small businesses, and there is no way around it either if you want to maintain your market position. That said, the tips shared above are quite effective and proven to work. So, apply as many of them as possible and you will see a considerable rise in foot traffic/online traffic to your store/website. Good luck!

5 Inexpensive Ways to Market Your Business

Every business owner is always looking for two things: growing their business and saving money. It would be great if everyone simply came in and gave volunteer hours or 100 million people suddenly decided that they needed to buy your products.

Marketers are always trying to make sure they are at the top of their game and looking for new ways to improve their brand. Tactics are changing constantly and what may work one month isn’t going to work the next.

While you may never receive Shark Tank like exposure either, there are surefire ways where you can successfully grow and market your business without breaking the bank.

Social Media

Social media is king these days. People get their news from social media, communicate with one another and use their profiles to promote businesses and products.

Just remember to keep it updated and fresh, so people won’t be trying to figure out if you’re still in business or not.

Networking

It’s a tale as old as time, but word of mouth and old-fashioned networking can do wonders for your business. You never know if that person at the convention, your neighbor or your friend’s cousin can help you or vice versa.

You don’t have to be that person who is whipping out their business card at every single minute, passing it around and making sure everyone knows who you are. You can be the kind and the cordial person who isn’t afraid to talk about themselves, up to a certain point.

Cross-Promotions

There are plenty of businesses out there who are direct competitors and others who can simply go together. Don’t you think the CEOs of Peanut Butter and Jelly love working together?

In all seriousness, cross-promotions are a great way to promote your business while helping others. If you run a tour business, you can put your information in local restaurants while you let them print their information in your tour packet.

Look for other business and workplaces that can offer you a symbiotic relationship. It also helps to have plenty of referrals out there as well!

Direct Emailing

Making a newsletter is a simple way to keep your customers involved in what is going on with any sales or promotions.

Just have customers give you their email address upon purchase or completion of services and voila! You’ve just found a surefire way to keep in contact with your customers for as long as you want.

Whether you may your newsletter weekly or monthly, make sure you’re consistent so you have constant feedback and outreach with existing customers and maybe even reach some new ones.

Giveaways

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone that would turn down something that was being given to them for free. That’s why you can offer put on various promotions and giveaways with your business.

You can do it through social media or your storefront. Have people like, comment and share your latest announcement to enter into a drawing. You could be doing a buy one, get one free with your store.

Pass out items at trade shows or conventions to have your name and logo circulating out there as much as possible.

Local Media

If you’re local, one of the ways to easily promote yourself is through local media. That can be a radio, TV or the newspaper. Local news is always looking for a story, and you can all and ask them to talk about your business.

It’s an easy way to not only talk about yourself but to make sure your business is being put in front of hundreds of eyes or ears. You don’t have to go on a blazing media trail, but just having something out there will help people become aware of what you’re doing and how they can reach you.

Need Storage Space for Your Business? Here Are 5 Ways to Create More!

Regardless of what kind of business you’re running, chances are that you need storage space. The problem lies in determining how much storage is enough. On the one hand, what you need is a big enough stock not to worry about the immediate future, however, there are some scenarios in which bulk offers on non-perishable items are so great that you can’t afford to miss out on them. This, nonetheless, means that you would need more storage space than you already have. Here are some of your options when it comes to this particular matter.

Outsourcing warehousing

The first option that you’ll have available would be to hire more storage space. The greatest benefit of this system lies in the fact that you pay only for the storage that you actively use, as well as in the fact that you don’t have to worry about the logistics. You may need self storage sizes selector to know which size fits best for you. This option is quite scalable, seeing as how you can always pay for more. You don’t even have to go for a warehouse, seeing as how individual storage units (in shipping containers) can be just as effective. The issue of drop-shipping, however, is the ultimate form of outsourcing warehousing, as well as outsourcing delivery.

How much storage can you keep secure?

It’s not just about how much you can store, it’s also about how much you can keep safe. You see, due to the fact that employee theft is a serious concern in the warehouse business, what you need to keep in mind is the fact that a bigger staff means a greater liability. Also, a bigger inventory is a bigger target, which is why you need to think about your ability to invest in security. Warehouse security investments are always necessary but you also need to figure out how much is enough.

Better organization

Sometimes, you don’t need more space. Instead, what you need is a way to better use the space that you already have. First of all, you can do this by hiring a seasoned warehouse manager. Second, you can do it by investing in a warehouse management system (WMS). Finally, you can invest in training your staff and proper warehouse equipment. Adequate shelving and equipment like forklifts, trolleys and similar can make the job of handling your storage a lot more effective.

Home-based business

The next thing you need to think of when it comes to running a home-based business is the fact that you have so many options within your own home as well as on your property. For instance, while the majority of people immediately think about the basement as an ideal storage space, the fact is that the attic or the main floor room that’s optimized for storage can be just as effective. On the other hand, you can also start thinking outside the box (outside your home, to be more precise) and look for agencies like Best Sheds. A shed of proper size can be more than an adequate storage solution, both temporarily and in the long term.

Predictive analytics

You can also look to reduce your storage needs and the best way to do so is to learn a thing or two about your business. For instance, when expecting large offers, you can make large bulk orders, however, by not having to do this preemptively, you’ll manage your warehouse a lot more effectively. Other than this, knowing which items are best-sellers, which supplies are most used and which items are seldom ever required, you’ll already make a move in the right direction.

Automation

Previously, we’ve talked about the better use of your warehouse capacities. The first thing that this will do for you is to make you feel like you have a bigger staff than you really have. There are various ways in which you can achieve this, ranging from an investment in robotics all the way to the above-discussed purchase of a premium WMS license. Other than this, the more experienced your staff is, the greater efficiency in management you can expect. All in all, you have many different options.

Planning ahead

Keep in mind that the most important thing about the issue of storage is your ability to plan ahead. If you are nearing the peak of the season, you need to stock up in time. Also, predicting growth is incredibly important and it can do wonders for you logistically. Combining all of the above-listed methods is a great start to do so but while making your own plan, make sure to check which of these options are scalable. Moreover, some options handle your problems in the long run as well. For instance, when running a home-based business, a purchase of a large backyard shed is bound to satisfy your needs for good. Otherwise, you might have a similar problem in the future.

Conclusion

As you can see, with so many things going your way, it’s really not that hard to create a system that suits you the best. Furthermore, some of these methods require other skills and proficiency in other fields. Staff-management skills and spatial organization are just two of the most obvious examples. Overall, where there’s a will, there’s always a way and your issue with storage is the perfect example of this concept.

5 Tips for Hosting a Successful Small Business Event

Planning a small business event isn’t easy. Any missteps can hurt your mission and have serious repercussions for your company. On the other hand, if you get everything right, a festivity like this can help your operations in many ways. For example, it can help you attract investors or increase your base of loyal customers. But how exactly do you host a successful small business event? Listed below are five tips you might want to know about.

Know what you want to achieve

You’d be surprised by how many small business owners in Australia believe hosting an event is a great idea but when asked what their goals are, they can’t seem to find an answer. To make certain this isn’t the case with you, start thinking about what you want your event to achieve as soon as you decide to host it. Do you want to draw attention to your newest product? Do you need financing for your next project? Or you just want your Facebook page to start growing? Know what your goals are and coming up with the ideas that’ll make your event a success will be much easier. Fail to do this and your event will turn out to be nothing but a waste of money.

Don’t forget about money

Obviously, hosting a small business event can be expensive. Not only do you need to pay for a venue but there also other aspects of it such as catering and entertainment. That said, it’s very important to establish a budget and stick to it when planning the entire thing. Having a clearly-set budget will help you avoid overspending and ensure there’s always some money left just in case some unexpected costs come up. One trick that worked well for many business owners is breaking the budget into small pieces. You can then assign those pieces to every aspect of your event and make certain everything goes as planned. Of course, keep a record of all your costs so that you can later determine whether your event can be labeled as a success.

Think about catering

There’s no point in hosting a small business event if you’re not going to serve food and drink. Forget about catering and you’ll see your attendees leave even before you get to say everything you want. When it comes to choosing food for your event, it’s important to have in mind that people know have different diets and getting something for everyone if your safest bet. For example, you can never go wrong with adding a few vegetarian options on your menu. Sydney experts in corporate events say that serving alcohol at your gathering is a perfect way to have everyone enjoy it. Therefore, turning to experts who offer professional alcohol delivery service in Sydney can turn out to be a great idea.

Delegate some of the tasks

You may believe that you’re capable of planning your upcoming gathering yourself but in reality, letting others help you is a much better idea. Juggling too many things at once means you can’t pay attention to details and details matter a lot when it comes to small business events. Luckily, all you need to do is turn to your staff members and find ways to include them in the planning process. Think about each of your employees’ strengths and interests and you’ll be able to assign them the roles they’ll enjoy. For example, if there’s an employee you know has a good taste in music, why not have them create a playlist for your event? This will allow you to focus on more important aspects of the planning process and ensure everyone enjoys the music at your event.

Get the word out

Depending on the type of event you’re hosting, you might need to promote it if you want to achieve all your goals. The good news is, there doesn’t seem to be a lack of channels you can use to promote your event. So, if you aim at reaching customers who might want to attend your event, using social media is a must. All you need to do is create a Facebook event and have your followers share it with their friends and family. In case there are important clients you’d want to attend your gathering, sending them a carefully-written email invitation is always going to work. Just don’t forget to include a signature that’ll help them remember your business. For local businesses, channels such as newspaper and radio commercials are guaranteed to work as well.

Final thoughts

Providing people with a fun event is a great way to help your business achieve its goals. The best way to do it is to start preparing on time and paying attention to every little detail. Have these five tips in mind and you should be able to host an event everyone will find memorable and enjoyable.

Top Business Tips for Starting a Small Business

Starting a business is a dream most people have had at some point in their lives. However, very few people actually take bold steps needed to make this dream into reality. If done correctly, starting a small business can be one of the most rewarding experiences you can have in your life. While it will certainly come with a lot of challenges you are going to have to overcome at the end of the day you will be able to tell yourself that you’ve achieved something great which you can really be proud of. If you are ready to commit to the idea of starting a business there are certain things you should keep in mind that will help you set yourself up for success. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the top business tips for starting a small business.

Get personally invested

By far the most important thing to keep in mind when starting a small business is that you have to be passionate about seeing your business succeed in order for it to actually do so. Getting personally invested in your business will give you the drive to put in extra work and go above in beyond when working on it. On top of this, if you don’t feel connected with your business the work you put in will seem unfulfilling and you won’t be able to find the drive to keep going during hard times.

Secure your funding as soon as possible

Funding makes up the lifeblood of every business and as such is essential for its success. In fact, lack of capital represents one of the most common reasons small businesses fail, so making sure you have enough funding should be one of your top priorities. There are many paths you can take when deciding how you are going to fund your business. The one most people take consists of a mix of different sources of funding, most notably getting as much as they can by saving and borrowing from their friends and family and covering the rest with a traditional business loan or opt for quick easy loans in case they need the money quickly. On top of this, there are a lot of alternative paths you can take. If you think your business idea has the potential to generally interest people, you can try to get the money you need through crowdfunding or other alternatives such as angel investors or venture capitalists. At the end of the day, the path you choose should ultimately depend on your personal needs, possibilities, and preferences.

Find a partner

One of the best ways to make the process of starting a small business easier, especially if it’s your first one, is the find a suitable partner to help you through the endeavor. Not only will it become easier for you to fund your business but you will also have someone to bounce ideas off, share the workload with and if things go south, share the responsibilities with. However, you should remember that starting a business with someone can really impact the relationship you have with that person. So, you should make sure it’s someone you can fully trust and rely on to stick with you through whatever the two of you may have to deal with during your partnership.

Have a plan

While getting personally invested, securing your funding and finding a partner are all things you should do or consider before starting a business the one thing you simply just can’t go without is a plan. It will represent the foundation from which you are going to build your business and will also give you a constant reference point you will always be able to turn to and remind yourself of what your aims and goals are. A plan will also help you determine if your business idea is going to be worth the time and money invested in it, which is especially useful information especially if you plan on looking for outside sources of funding for your business.

Don’t stop learning

When starting a business, it’s important to keep in mind that everything should be viewed as a lesson. Even though there are extensive books and articles written on the subject, really knowing how to set up and run a small business from scratch is a skill that you can really only acquire through experience and a good attitude towards the whole endeavor. Because of this, you shouldn’t get yourself down when something doesn’t go the way you planned, instead, you should view it as a positive experience that will prevent you from doing the same mistake again.

Conclusion

While this list doesn’t consist out of everything you need to know when starting a small business, the tips listed here will help you put your small business on the right track for success and ultimately make the whole process a lot less stressful and pleasurable. With that being said, the most useful tip you can keep in mind when starting a small business is to just keep going. No matter how hard it gets or how many obstacles you face, the only way to succeed is to not give up and constantly strive to improve.

Office Storage: Smart Ways to Optimise It

Since the vast majority of people spend a large portion of their adult lives working, it becomes quite clear why office spaces should be neatly decorated and well-organized. Constantly having to wade through piles of various clutter can significantly hinder one’s productivity and motivation. That’s why every employer should aim at finding the best storage solutions for their office space and organize everything neatly.

Managing to find the right storage solutions can be somewhat tricky, however, and being able to organize and optimize everything can prove to be somewhat challenging. That’s why we’ve prepared a list of some interesting ideas you can optimize your office’s storage and create a functioning system that everyone can benefit from. Take a look.

https://www.pexels.com/photo/black-blur-close-up-colors-433629/

Try to go paperless

The first step towards a cleaner and more organized office space is certainly trying to go paperless as much as possible. Not only do paper copies of files create a visual mess – especially when not stored properly – but they also harbour dust, reducing in-office air quality by filling it with various allergens. Therefore, file away important papers you simply cannot have be misplaced, such as signed contracts, cheques and similar documents. Anything else that’s lying around your office in paper form you should simply scan – to create a digital copy – and shred or recycle some other way.

Create an activity centre

Next, you should create an activity centre in your office, especially if there’s a certain activity you perform frequently throughout your workday. For instance, if you are constantly reaching for a stapler or paper clips but you don’t have them organized at arm’s reach, you’ll be wasting a lot of time trying to find them. So, instead, you should organize all of the office tools you reach for regularly in one area, so that you know exactly where everything is the next time you need to use it.

Implement smart storage solutions

Furthermore, depending on the type of office, you will also have to add storage solutions so that you have a place to store all of the things you’re not using in your day-to-day, but that you still need to keep. So, the office storage solutions you choose to go with will depend on the line of business you’re in and the type of things you need to store away. Aside from that, you should organize your desk drawers as well by using drawer dividers and organizers, and you should also see to it that every type of document that’s still in the physical form has its rightful folder.

Label everything

A well-organized storing system wouldn’t really be possible without labels. Sure, you will have all of your files neatly organized in folders – maybe even colour coordinated – but there really is no way or need to try and remember what’s inside each folder. Instead, invest in a practical label maker and label all of your files properly so that you can find what you’re looking for quickly and easily.

Declutter on a weekly basis

Aside from trying to keep your office neat, depending on the line of business you’re in, you should try to declutter your office on a weekly basis. Instead of waiting for the pile of files to become overwhelming and risking to lose something important in the process, you should see to it that at the end of every week, you go through everything that’s piled up during the week and organize it. File away everything you need to keep, scan the files you don’t need in physical form and recycle the things you don’t need.

Archive old files

Some business documents, while still important, you simply don’t have to keep after some time. Put differently, they are still important to you as a business owner, but they bear no other relevance. These files you can either store away in your business’s archive or you can simply scan them and upload them to the cloud. The same goes for business emails you are no longer required to keep.

When organizing your office space, pay special attention to storage. A well-optimized storage system will mean a world of difference for both your business and your employees, to make sure that you do it right.

New Age Food Era: How Tech Improved Our Food and Lifestyles

Technology is improving every part of our lives and is having a great impact. Food is one of the categories that has certainly not been left untouched. And, no, we’re not talking about microwaves and electronic kettles – we’re talking real 21st-century changes that are having an impact on our lives and taking us into the future with the help of the food we eat.

Smart fridges and storages

How many times have you gone to the store to get groceries and forgotten to check whether you have milk at home? Somehow you just wish that your fridge could tell you what you have and what you should get. Well – it can. Smart fridges and smart storages have cameras that can give you a look inside your fridge no matter where you are. Some are even smart enough to recognize different groceries and automatically generate a shopping list. But it doesn’t end there. You’ve come home from work and you just want a nice, quick dinner but the ingredients you have on hand look like there’s no possible way they can be combined. Well, there are apps now that will tell you exactly what you can make with the ingredients you have in your fridge.

Smart homes

There’s no more worrying about whether you’ve left the stove on or if your freezer is working while you’re on vacation. With a smart home, everything is connected to your smartphone. Not only can you turn your lights on and off, but you can turn on your oven an hour before you get home to be welcomed by a cooked meal (or a slow cooker, if you want to be safe), check what temperature your fridge and freezer are at and literally even toast your bread.

Higher quality of ingredients

With evolving technology, we have more possibilities to eat various, healthy food every day. Things like freeze-dried fruit weren’t possible a few years ago, and they are such wonderful, healthy alternatives to regular sugar-loaded dried fruits. We also couldn’t understand the complex benefits that come from ingredients like pine pollen which are now readily available. Fruit and veg are picked in season and frozen nearly instantly to preserve their nutrients.

Food apps

Counting calories is boring and planning out next week’s meals is even worse. But you have apps today that do all the work for you. You tell them if you have any special requirements and dietary restrictions and you will get an auto-generated meal plan and shopping list for healthy meals throughout the week. Not to mention apps that help you pick out restaurants when you’re on the go and in a foreign country, meal delivery apps and various cooking apps that allow you to follow a recipe in real-time. It has also allowed cooks from all over the world to share recipes and tips through social media with millions of people.

Food technology

Cooking food isn’t what it used to be. We are using technology to prepare our foods in ways that couldn’t have been imagined just a few years ago. Sous vide appliances are now basically staples of the kitchen, and if you haven’t played with dry ice to fizzy up your fruit or create cool looking things, you haven’t lived. But chefs around the world that have access to more expensive toys are playing around with chemistry and technology to deliver flavors and textures we wouldn’t ever think to create.

Eating healthy isn’t the only thing we’re getting help with. Nearly everyone is wearing FitBits, tracking their steps and planning out their workouts. You step on a stationary bike in a gym and it doesn’t just track how much you’ve pedaled, but how many calories you’ve burned, what your heart rate is and so many other things. Not to mention that there are scanners that tell you within seconds the amount of body fat and the overall state of your body.

So the tech has changed a lot, but it has unfortunately also made the unhealthy stuff more accessible and easier to do. So we have so many things at our fingertips, but we need to control ourselves and make smart choices – almost as smart as our machines.

Why are Advertising Signs so Important for Local Businesses?

If you’re in business and have a physical location, it’s vital you have a strategic approach to driving customers through your door. With so much focus on online advertising media such as Facebook, Google Ads, and other platforms, it’s largely forgotten that bricks and motor stores can still use traditional means to promote their business.

One such method that is so frequently overlooked is signage. Although adding custom signs to your business may not seem like an innovative idea, not implementing this basic marketing method can have detrimental effects on your business.

Here are 5 key reasons you can’t overlook signs for your business.

1. You can capture passing traffic

Signage, such as signage for restaurants, is an effective way of encouraging those walking past your location to stop and come inside. Generally, there will be two types of people who pass your premises: those who are aware of your business and those who are not. Your signage effectively has the same result for each type of person (ie. it gets them into your store) but for two different reasons.

For the people who have not heard of your business, you are actively promoting it to them, showing them you exist and potentially gaining a brand new customer. For those who have heard of your business, you’re reminding them you exist. You see, people need to see your brand or offer several times before they act, so giving them a sign on their way past may just be the push they need to take action.

2. It’s the silent salesperson

Your signage effectively sells all the time. It takes no breaks. It doesn’t take sick days. And it sticks it out during the holidays. Your business’ signage is the best salesperson you’ll ever have because it constantly reminds people of your brand or tells people about your special offers. It works 24/7 to keep you top of your customers’ minds.

3. It’s cost-effective advertising

Generally speaking, signage is one of the most cost-effective advertising methods you can use. While there may be a sizable initial outlay, once your signage is up, there are no real ongoing costs.

Unlike pay per click advertising or the monthly costs of search engine optimization, your cost per view technically decreases each time somebody looks at your sign! Providing you opt for a good quality sign, you’ll get years of advertising from a single one-off investment.

4. It connects online with offline

It can’t be denied that businesses must have an online presence these days, but for businesses with physical locations, it’s important to blend that with your offline presence too.

If someone has been exposed to your business online, you need a way for them to make the jump from the digital world to the real world. So many people shop online because it’s easy, so you must ensure that you make shopping at your physical store just as easy. Business signage acts as a guiding light to your location, which is vital when you’re trying to prove that customers are better off coming down to your store than buying goods and services online.

Think about it, if you saw an ad online for a moving sale and there were no moving sale banners at or near the house you arrived at, would you bother getting out of your car or would you go to the one down the street that did have signage?

5. It puts you above your competition

If there are a high density of businesses in your industry in a similar location, your signage can make or break you. It can be the reason customers choose your business over the others… or it can be the reason they choose the others over you.

For that reason, it’s not only important to have signage, but it’s crucial to have great signage. If the signs outside your business look old and run down, or they just don’t look professional, it can be as detrimental to your business as not having signage at all!

6. Repeat Business

It’s important to understand that signage isn’t just an important visual component of your external marketing too. Once your customers are inside, you want to make sure you do everything you can to encourage them to come back again.

Repeat customers are your best customers, so you must display signage detailing promotions or showing them why they should connect with you online.

The Bottom Line

It’s really simple! Make sure your business has professional signage which reflects your business and gives customers a reason to come in. Whether it’s vinyl window signage, A-frame boards or flags and banners, you can’t afford to not have it!
